Book Week, Week 5, Term 3, 2015

This week was Book Week. We did lots of fun activities with books.
On Monday we were lucky enough to be the first class to go to the Book Fair in the Library. We thought the Library looked amazing! Our fish art as well as the art by the rest of the school helped to decorate the Library.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we had some different teachers come and read us some books after morning tea. We thought it was great!

On Tuesday we did our window display for the book "Animalia" by Graham Base. Miss McCoy chose this book because it has the letters of the alphabet in. We have been learning the alphabet and the letter sounds. This book has alliteration in it. Alliteration is when the words start with the same letter.

On Wednesday we went to a book reading with props by Kirsty.
We had to warm up for reading. We warmed up our eyes, ears and our voices.
Kirsty needed her breathe freshener to freshen her breathe so her breathe wouldn't run out while reading. It took her awhile to find it.
She found her second pair of ears...
She found a loud speaker...
She found croc...lots of clothes and reading glasses before she found her breathe freshner.
We read Caps for Sale.
Kirsty did lots of actions and got us to help her read. It was a lot of fun!
We then acted out the story and sang a song. It was a lot of fun! In the story all the monkeys stole the hats and we got to be the monkeys with the hats on.

Our Discovery was book themed. Each room had an activity with a different book.

On Thursday we came to school dressed up as a book character. Our grandparents also came to read with us. This was a fun day! On Thursday night we came to school for some bedtime stories in our Pajamas. We loved the Thursday activities!!

On Friday we did more fun book things. We read to our buddy class and did book art and craft and we had a book scavenger hunt. We had to hunt out the books and write down the titles.

We loved book week!

School Visits, week 4, term 3

Today we had some new friends come for their school visits. Lyrik, Hazel and James came to spend the morning with us.
We read a book about a cute wee penguin who was lonely and needed a friend. We did penguin art using collage. We had to be patient and show persistence.
For fitness today we went to show our new friends the playground. Before we got some free time we had a challenge. We had to go up something, down something, over something and through something.
We are looking forward to our new friends starting school and joining us in Room 1.

Worlds Apart Show, week 4, term 3

We have been very lucky this week as we have had 2 shows. Maui and the Sun on Monday and Worlds Apart on Tuesday. The Worlds Apart show was for Book Week and the Storylines Festival 2015.

It was a show comparing a boy living today and a girl living a hundred years ago. The story had 3 books integrated in it. Kakapo Dance, Kauri and Jims Letters.

Edward and his mum living today in 2015.
Molly and her brother, Reg, living 100 years ago in 1915.
When Molly and Edward had their 10th birthdays they found a box which they thought was a present. When they lifted the lid they could see each other.
They couldn't hear each other so they thought they could communicate to each other using "Kakapo Dance" the book.
Some of us got to help Molly and Edward talk by dancing like a bird.

They thought they wanted to dance. We showed off our dance moves.

They then learnt they could communicate through letters.
They realised they lived in the "here and now 100 years apart". Their worlds are very different. They wrote to each other about how things were the same and different. Edward realised the Kauri tree outside their house might have been there 100 years ago. He looked at the "Kauri" book to see if this was possible. The spirit of the Kauri tree appeared and talked to him.

Edward looked at the "Jims letters" book to see what it was like fighting in the war, where Molly's dad had gone. Edward researches Molly's dad Joseph, and how he got on after the war to tell her there was nothing to worry about.

Molly's brother and Edwards mum didn't believe Molly and Edward could see each other. Molly's brother and Edwards mum got rid of the box which helped them see each other. They were really upset they wouldn't see each other again but learnt a lot.
If you believe in good things, good things can happen. Things change but not all change is bad. Celebrate change, believe in it and what will happen.

Bella's Biscuits

For show and tell on Friday, Bella bought in some biscuit. She helped her Mum make them. The biscuits were in the shape of a star, which Bella helped to cut out. They then added chocolate to the middle and stuck two biscuits together.
The biscuits were delicious!
We all loved Bella's show and tell!

Thanks Bella!!!
